Event Title:
Monthly Meeting - Paul Keister
Event Description:
Join us in our monthly meeting. Our guest speaker is Paul Keister and he will be presenting on SQL Server 2008 CLR Host. <br> Presentation synopsis: Many developers limit themselves when they think of stored procedures only in terms of set oriented operations and business logic. Managed stored procedures open the door to previously unthinkable capabilities: for example, a stored procedure that implements a live RSS feed reader. In this presentation, Paul Keister examines the process of creating and deploying CLR stored procedures, focusing on the practical aspects of this platform. The business case for using SQL CLR integration is discussed and realistic examples are presented, including an RSS reader. Security and deployment issues are reviewed in the context of solving a major development concern: how can we get IT and management approval to turn this feature on? Using example code, Paul will demonstrate a layered approach to the CLR Host that makes the best of .NET Framework classes and built in TSQL features, including new SQL 2008 features such as Hierarchy ID. About Paul Keister: Paul Keister has been developing for Windows since 1994. Paul began his career using C and C++ to develop vertical market and off the shelf offerings, most notably Passport Design’s MusicTime Deluxe 3.0 music notation software. As a Development Manger as Eagle Research, Paul led projects for various clients including Safeway, Wells Fargo, Hitachi, and Ceridian. In 2003 Paul founded PJPM to provide small businesses and startups with custom software. He enjoys sailing on San Francisco Bay and playing electric bass, having most recently appeared with The Ethel Merman Experience.
